Modern cars contain at least one Electronic Control Unit, ECU or computer to monitor engine emissions and adjust the engine for minimal emissions. It does this by comparing signals from many different sensors embedded within the car and comparing data to its built-in database i.e. It's engine mapping system.

The computer can also sense when something has gone wrong and can inform the driver with the "Check Engine" light. By reading the Fault Code from the computer the auto electrician has a better chance of fixing the problem.
Depending on how expensive the car is, there can be many other computers on board.

Using the sensors information, the computer controls the fuel injectors, spark plugs and the idle speed to get the best performance possible from the engine while keeping emissions low.
