Relays and Switches:- Switches
A switch controls the transfer of power from the source i.e. battery or motor to other devices. In order to work correctly, a mechanical switch must open and close the circuit as quickly as possible to prevent sparking and rapid corrosion of the contacts. If this occurs, then eventually the corrosion will not pass current and the switch will fail to work.

A relay is a very simple electro-mechanical switch that relies on an electro-magnet to carry out the switching action automatically. It consists of 2 separate circuits:- the first controls the electro-magnet and the second is the actual 'Switch'.
As current passes through a coil of wire, a magnetic field is created. The magnetism pulls on a spring loaded bar called an armature which acts as a switch making or braking the electrical contact for the main circuit. Depending upon the design of the relay the main circuit can either be normally ON (the magnet Breaks the circuit) or normally OFF (the magnet Makes the circuit).
Relay problems can be difficult to detect unless complete failure has occurred. The insulation on the wire making up the coil sometimes cracks and the coil 'short circuits'. This does not result in complete failure. Instead the magnetic field that the coil creates is greatly reduced so that the circuit Make or Break is not as rapid or intermittent. Corrosion of the contacts is also a common problem. Mechanical failure of a relay is very unusual.
